Applications for Short-Term Fellowships: Empowering Women Leaders for Peace in Cape Verde
Strategic financial support is essential for strengthening the role of women in building and maintaining peace in Cape Verde. Recognizing the crucial importance of female leadership in this context, this proposal aims to describe the importance of a short-term fellowship program specifically designed to empower and support Cape Verdean women involved in peacebuilding initiatives, conflict mediation, and the promotion of social cohesion.
Building lasting and sustainable peace requires a holistic and inclusive approach, where the active participation of women is fundamental. Studies consistently demonstrate that the inclusion of women in peace processes not only increases the likelihood of success of these processes, but also ensures that issues related to peace, security, and justice are addressed in a more comprehensive and sensitive manner. However, in many contexts, women are still underrepresented in leadership positions and disadvantaged in access to the training and resources necessary to play an effective role.
These short-term fellowships, with durations adaptable to each candidate's needs, aim to fill this gap. The main focus is on developing specific skills such as: mediation and negotiation, conflict analysis, leadership and management, effective communication, and advocacy. The fellowships may fund participation in training courses, workshops, seminars, or other professional development opportunities relevant to the field of peacebuilding. The project will be carefully developed to provide learning opportunities tailored to the individual needs of each candidate, using experienced and recognized trainers in the national and international arena.
Beyond capacity building, the scholarships will include direct financial support to cover costs associated with participation in development activities, such as tuition fees, transportation, accommodation, and food. This support is crucial to eliminating financial barriers that often prevent women from accessing training and, consequently, from rising to leadership positions. The project will have a mentoring component, which will pair beneficiaries with experienced mentors who will provide support, guidance, and motivation throughout the process. Sharing experiences and creating a network of women leaders in peacebuilding are essential elements of this project.
The expected impact of this project is multifaceted. Firstly, it is anticipated that there will be a significant increase in the skills and knowledge of Cape Verdean women involved in peace initiatives, resulting in increased effectiveness and influence. Secondly, the scholarships are expected to contribute to strengthening the network of women leaders in the field of peace in Cape Verde, promoting collaboration and mutual support. Finally, the project will have a positive impact on communities, as empowered women will be able to play a more active role in conflict resolution, promoting social cohesion, and building lasting peace.
Continuous evaluation and monitoring will be integral parts of the project. Clear indicators will be used to measure the progress and impact of the scholarships, including increased knowledge levels, participation in events, and the impact of activities on their communities. Results and lessons learned will be widely disseminated through annual reports, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events, ensuring the sustainability of the project and the replicability of best practices.
