Funding Opportunity: Boosting Indigenous Research and Leadership in Canada and the Global South

The promotion of indigenous research and leadership emerges as a fundamental pillar for building more just, resilient and inclusive societies, both in Canada and in the Global South. Developing and strengthening capacities in these areas is essential for valorising and preserving ancestral knowledge, promoting indigenous peoples' self-determination and responding effectively to the challenges faced by communities. This funding, specifically designed to boost these initiatives, aims to create a positive and lasting impact, catalysing significant transformations.

The proposed financial support aims to fund innovative projects that address the specific needs of indigenous communities in Cape Verde and, at the same time, establish links with similar initiatives in Canada, facilitating the exchange of experiences and the dissemination of best practices. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to: participatory research that actively involves indigenous communities; the development of training and capacity-building programmes for future indigenous leaders; support for cultural and linguistic preservation initiatives; and the promotion of sustainable development projects rooted in traditional values.

The funding makes it possible to carry out in-depth studies on issues affecting indigenous communities, such as health, education, food security, natural resource management and adaptation to climate change. These studies, based on rigorous methodologies and sensitive to cultural particularities, will provide crucial information for formulating more effective public policies and making informed decisions. In addition, the programme funds the creation of research and collaboration networks between indigenous researchers, academics, community members and other stakeholders, promoting a multidisciplinary and integrative approach.

A crucial aspect of the funding is the focus on empowering indigenous leadership. The programme will support the training of future leaders through mentoring programmes, workshops and exchanges, equipping them with the tools and skills needed to defend the rights of their communities, actively participate in decision-making processes and drive sustainable development. This commitment to indigenous leadership is essential to ensure that indigenous communities play a central role in shaping their own future.

Transnational collaboration with Canada represents a unique opportunity to learn from Canadian experiences in indigenous research and leadership. The programme will facilitate exchanges, seminars and joint projects, allowing for the sharing of knowledge, the identification of good practices and the building of lasting partnerships. This collaboration will benefit both parties by promoting constructive dialogue and the development of innovative solutions to common challenges.

In Cape Verde, as in many nations of the Global South, indigenous identity, although diverse, remains a vital force. This funding will serve as a catalyst for the recognition and valorisation of this heritage, offering a platform for cultural expression, the revitalisation of language and the celebration of traditions. Support for sustainable cultural tourism projects, traditional craft initiatives and the preservation of historic sites are examples of how funding can contribute to safeguarding indigenous heritage and strengthening community pride.

Applying for this funding represents a golden opportunity for organisations and communities in Cape Verde that are dedicated to the cause of indigenous research and leadership. Through funding, it is possible to drive transformative projects, promote self-determination, strengthen cultural identity and build a more prosperous and just future for all.
