This is gender, the global photography competition organised by Global Health 50/50, is back. Now in its second year, This is Gender invites photographers to share their vision of what gender looks like and submit photographs that explore the various ways in which gender norms - rigid and fluid, traditional and progressive - are experienced and subverted by men and women and non-binary people.

Delivery time:3rd January 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic held up a mirror to society and revealed our relationship with our environments, with each other and with the systems in which we live. In turn, the pandemic revealed existing social divisions and inequalities. As borders closed and our gaze turned inwards, the pandemic both infuriated pervasive and restrictive notions of gender roles and catalysed transformations in the gender landscape.

At a time of global upheaval, life and society as a whole are affected and changed in diverse and gender-specific ways. It is now more important than ever to produce and disseminate images that reflect the diverse realities of gender. We encourage photographers to help expand the images associated with the concept of gender by exploring, for example:

  • How the labour scene - professional, domestic, affectionate or otherwise - is gendered
  • How gender intersects with health and well-being
  • How the politics and business industries exploit gender roles and how they are challenged
  • How gender intersects with other aspects of identities and vulnerabilities

We are particularly interested, but not exclusively, in the work that deals with these issues in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All forms of photography and photojournalism are welcome and photographers from low- and middle-income communities and countries are particularly encouraged to participate. The winners will be chosen by a panel of international experts in photography, visual culture, gender and global health.
